A European research foundation

Where the evidence of human life endures.

Residua Research Institute studies how people make, remember, and leave traces of social life. We work at the meeting point of sociology, computational social science, artificial intelligence, ethnography, and biomolecular archaeology, turning rigorous method into durable public knowledge.

Research areas

Four lines of inquiry, one integrated platform

Residua brings computational, social-scientific, and laboratory methods into a single research environment, designed so that each discipline strengthens the others.

Computational Social Science & AI

Large-scale data, machine learning, and the responsible development of research tools for understanding social behaviour.

Sociology, Ethics & Public Engagement

Social theory, ethnographic fieldwork, and the ethics of research, knowledge, and public communication.

Biomolecular Archaeology & Analytical Chemistry

Our mission

Independent research in service of the public good

Residua Research Institute is established as a not-for-profit foundation. Our purpose is to conduct and disseminate original research, to compete for and host major European grants, and to build lasting capacity for the next generation of researchers.

We hold our disciplines as equals. Sociology, computation, and laboratory science each bring questions and methods that the others cannot supply alone, and our work is strongest where they meet.
